Rick Collins Photography
Vancouver, Victoria and worldwide Wedding Photographer
www.rickcollinsphotography.com

We love love love when couples send us their wedding photos! It's even better when we have contributed to their reception stationery and we get to see how it was displayed at the wedding. But even if we just designed the invitations, it's wonderful to see how the wedding turned out. One photographer we've been seeing slideshows from frequently is Rick Collins. Every time I see his photos I am amazed at his shots. He has this knack for capturing unbelievable moments as if he was a fly on the wall and portraying the wedding as if it was an epic adventure. Brilliant!

Twilight Drive-In Theatre - Langley
260th Street & Fraser Highway, Langley, V4W 2B1. T: 604-856-5063.

It's the only Drive-In Theatre in the lower mainland. Open 7 nights a week, this is such a good idea with a group of friends on a warm summer night. I love those nights. We recommend being a little prepared with some blankets, something comfortable to sit on and maybe some yummy snacks to keep you going through the night.

Twilight closes about the end of November, depending on weather and attendance and re-open about mid February.

Outdoor Pools
There are a few outdoor pools that I'm aware of in Vancouver. There is the one at Mount Pleasant Community Centre, Second Beach Pool (Stanley Park) and Kitsilano Outdoor Swimming Pool. I tend to forget that these places exist and never end up taking advantage of them during the hot summer days (now that hot summer days have arrived). It's such a great way to get a bit of exercise and grab those delicious sun rays.

"Don't forget to bring a towel!"

20th Annual Symphony in the Park
July 13th
Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, presented by the City of Burnaby and Kinder Morgan Inc, will perform in Deer Lake Park. 7:30-9:30pm. Free admission. If I was around for this, I would definitely go.

Vancouver International Jazz Festival
June 20th - 29th
1800 Musicians, 400 concerts, 40 venues.
This is one festival I try and participate in every year. I generally don't know 95% of the musicians but every year I am pleasantly surprised by someone or something. Last year I was blown away by Flat Earth Society. Who's it gonna be this year?

Come out and cheer for your favourite boat while eating yummy food and listening to live music. It's a big party by the water. I recommend taking the skytrain or walking there. It gets real crazy like.

Rob and Andrea are friends of ours who organize this event, which is getting bigger and bigger every year. We're so proud of them! In their words:
As fellow crafters and indie craft lovers, got craft is dedicated to showcasing the best crafts Vancouver has to offer. Now it's your turn to pledge handmade and shop local. Why? It helps the environment by reducing your carbon footprint, it keeps your hard earned money in the community and it supports Vancouver's handmade revolution! We, here, at got craft headquarters, hope to provide exposure to our vendors and sponsors while providing the general public with an opportunity to shop for one of a kind goodies

VONEGUT and The Slaughterhouse Orchestra
at The Music Gallery, Toronto, Ontario
Saturday, April 19th, 2008

Doors 7pm, concert 8pm
$15 regular/$10 member + senior/$5 student

A musical version of Kurt Vonnegut's book.

Between 1922 and 2007, a writer known as Kurt Vonnegut lived. He wrote many books. He died. Between 2007 and 2008, a couple artists from Toronto known as Dwight Schenk and Scott Good lived. They wrote many songs. They are still alive. So it goes. Scott and Dwight met on planet Earth. They made sounds that they hoped would end all of humanity’s silly need to cry. Vonegut was the name of their “project”. It was secret, but not at the top of secrets. The government had no interest in it. Not until Vonegut almost succeeded. What Vonegut ended up accomplishing was almost the opposite. Their sounds destroyed the need to do anything BUT cry. The government cried, and noticed. Years after Scott and Dwight present Vonegut in full, humans will ask, “Don’t cry over spilt milk? What does that mean?” And older generations will say, “Vonegut”. So it goes.

VONEGUT: Dwight Schenk (vocals, guitar, percussion, composer) Scott Good (trombone, piano, composer)

THE SLAUGHTERHOUSE ORCHESTRA: Dave Clark (drums, percussion) Chris Banks (bass) Richard Underhill (saxaphone) Rebecca Hennessy (trumpet) Erik Ross (keyboards, piano) Phoebe Tsang (violin) Bernardo Padron (saxaphone, flute) MEA (cello) Richard Marsella (actor, guitar) Andrea Kathryn Wiltzius (vocals) Amy Laing (cello)

Bon Iver at the Media Club with Phosphorescent
Justin Vernon moved to a remote cabin in the woods of Northwestern Wisconsin at the onset of winter. Tailing from the swirling breakup of his long time band, he escaped to the property and surrounded himself with simple work, quiet, and space. He lived there alone for three months, filling his days with wood splitting and other chores around the land. This special time slowly began feeding a bold, uninhibited new musical focus. This slowly evolved into days filled with twelve-hour recording blocks, breaking only for trips on the tractor into the pines to saw and haul firewood, or for frozen sunrises high up a deer stand. All of his personal trouble, lack of perspective, heartache, longing, love, loss and guilt that had been stock piled over the course of the past six years, was suddenly purged into the form of song. The end result is, For Emma, Forever Ago, a nine-song album comprised of what's been dubbed a striking debut by critics and fans alike.

Outdoor Adventure and Travel Show
With the constant rain and grey that fill our Vancouver skies, by February I think we're all in desperate need for vitamin D (read: sunshine!) and dry weather. What better way to start thinking about the warm days of spring than to visit the many shows happening around town?

This February 16 & 17th, Vancouver hosts the annual Outdoor Adventure and Travel Show at BC Place Stadium. If you're like me, longing for the dog days of summer and all the fun camping adventures it brings, then check out the show. You might just find your 2008 canoe there!

January, 2008 - the first one!!!
Dine Out Vancouver 2008
It's a fact: we love food. So we're pretty excited about Dine Out Vancouver 2008, which starts on January 16th and ends February 3rd. For $15 (up to $35 - not including alcohol, taxes and gratuities) you can enjoy a three-course meal at one of Vancouver's pretty fabulous restaurants. They're the kind of restaurants you're supposed to take someone special to, put on your sunday dress for, and refrain from belching at. Just saying!!
